Solving the Toughest Floors in Bedfordshire
Not Every Floor Is Straightforward
When you see a beautiful finished floor in a magazine or a showroom, you are seeing the end of the process, not the beginning. Behind every perfect surface there is usually a subfloor that needed serious work. Uneven concrete, damp, rotten boards, out-of-square rooms. The Problem with Old Concrete Floors
Bedfordshire has a lot of housing from the 1930s through to the 1970s, and most of those homes have concrete floors downstairs. Concrete sounds solid, but it is rarely flat. Over decades it settles, cracks and dips, sometimes by a surprising amount across the width of a room.
This matters enormously for modern flooring. LVT, laminate and vinyl are thin, rigid products that will follow every bump in the subfloor. Lay them over an uneven concrete floor and you will see every imperfection through the surface within weeks, and you may hear creaks and see seams opening up. The solution is levelling compound, applied by someone who knows how to gauge it correctly and make it flat. Get that right and the final floor looks as good as the showroom version.
The Moisture Problem: LVT's Hidden Enemy
One of the most common mistakes we see is LVT being laid over a concrete floor without moisture testing. Concrete is porous, and older concrete can hold moisture for decades. If you seal a moisture-laden slab under a waterproof LVT, the moisture has nowhere to go, and it will push up through the seams and cause the floor to fail.
That is why we always moisture test a concrete subfloor before recommending LVT. It is a quick check that saves customers thousands of pounds in failed floors. If moisture levels are too high, we can recommend the right damp proof membrane or advise on a more suitable product. It is the kind of honest advice that does not sell a floor today but protects the customer for years.
Rotten and Uneven Floorboards
Upstairs, the classic Bedfordshire problem is the floorboard. In older homes, floorboards warp, squeak and in the worst cases rot. We have lifted floorboards in 1930s semis to find water damage from an old leak that was fixed years ago, but left the boards ruined underneath.
The correct fix is not to lay over the problem. It is to screw down the boards, replace the damaged ones, and level the whole floor with plywood where needed. This adds time and cost, which is why cheap fitters skip it. But skipping it means a floor that flexes, creaks and eventually fails. We would rather do the job properly and charge a fair price than leave a customer with a floor that never feels solid.
Complex Stair Runners
Stairs are the hardest part of any carpet job, and winding staircases in Victorian terraces are the hardest of all. Each step has to be measured, cut and fitted precisely, with the pattern flowing correctly down the staircase. The padding has to be applied evenly, and the carpet has to be stretched so there are no ripples or baggy edges.
We have fitted carpet runners on some of the most awkward staircases in Luton and St Albans. It takes patience, precision and a steady hand, but the result is a staircase that looks immaculate and feels safe underfoot. A poorly fitted staircase carpet is both ugly and dangerous, and it is one of the most common complaints we hear about other people's work.
The Open-Plan Challenge
Modern extensions have given Bedfordshire homes wonderful open-plan kitchen and living spaces, but they also present a flooring challenge. Open-plan areas mean long runs of flooring, and with rigid products like LVT and laminate, long runs mean expansion is a real issue. The floor needs to be laid with the correct expansion gaps, and the joins need to be planned so they fall in the right places.
We have fitted herringbone LVT in open-plan kitchens where the pattern has to flow continuously across a huge space, and every single seam has to be invisible. It is meticulous work that rewards careful planning. Seeing that first run of boards go down straight and staying that way across an entire room is one of the most satisfying parts of the job.

A fitter who has repaired rotten boards knows what to look for before the job starts. A fitter who has fitted a hundred staircases does not need to guess.
