The Project That Had It All

Every so often a project comes along that reminds us why we love this trade. This is the story of a 1930s semi-detached house in Luton, a home full of character but in desperate need of flooring help. It is a perfect example of what a professional team can achieve when the problem is diagnosed properly and the solution is done right.

The Problem: A Tired, Damaged Floor

The customer had lived in the house for years, and the original floor had seen better days. The front room carpet was worn flat and stained. More importantly, the floor underneath was in poor condition. The floorboards had warped over decades of use, and there were signs of an old damp problem in one corner of the room.

The customer had already had two quotes from other companies. Both had simply proposed laying new carpet straight over the old floorboards. That might have looked fine for a while, but we knew it would not last. The flex in the floor would work the seams apart, the damp would eventually show through, and within a couple of years the customer would be back to square one.

Listening to the Customer

Before we recommended anything, we sat down and talked through how the family actually used the room. It was the main living space, used every day, with children and a dog, and the customer wanted something that could take real life without showing it. That ruled out a delicate carpet immediately, and pointed towards a hard-wearing floor that was easy to clean.

The customer was also honest with us about their budget. Rather than pushing them towards the most expensive option, we talked through what mattered most: durability, looks, and a floor that would not need replacing again in a few years. That conversation shaped the whole project, and it is exactly why we never quote without a proper survey and a proper conversation first.

The Solution: Fix the Subfloor First

When we surveyed the room, we explained exactly what was going on. The floorboards needed to be screwed down to stop the movement, the damaged boards replaced, and the whole floor levelled with plywood to create a solid, even base. It was more work than the other quotes, but it was the work the room actually needed.

The customer could see the difference between our approach and the quick-fix quotes. We were not trying to upsell them; we were trying to protect them from the cost of doing the job twice. They trusted us, and that trust was the foundation of the whole project.

The subfloor preparation took the best part of a day. Every loose board was screwed down firmly, the damaged boards were cut out and replaced with new timber, and the plywood went down to create a single, solid, perfectly level surface. By the time the prep was finished, the floor was as solid as the day the house was built.

The Result: Herringbone LVT

With a solid, level, properly prepared subfloor, the customer was free to choose the floor they really wanted. They had fallen in love with the idea of herringbone LVT, a premium luxury vinyl product with a stunning wood effect laid in a classic herringbone pattern. It is a beautiful floor, but it is one of the most demanding products to fit, because every single seam has to be perfect.

This is where the preparation paid off. Herringbone LVT over an uneven or flexing floor would be a disaster, with seams opening and pattern lines drifting. Over the solid base we created, it laid out perfectly. We worked carefully through the pattern, keeping the lines true across the whole room, and the result was a floor that looked like it had been designed with the house.

The Finished Room

When we finished, the transformation was remarkable. The tired, worn room had become the showpiece of the house. The herringbone pattern drew the eye across the floor, the colour complemented the original 1930s features, and the solid base underneath meant the floor felt absolutely solid underfoot, with no movement and no creaks.

The customer was delighted, and they told us the room finally looked the way they had always imagined. It was a project that proved the value of doing the job properly, and the kind of job that makes us proud of our craft.

What This Project Teaches

This Luton home is a perfect case study for three important lessons. First, the condition of the subfloor matters more than the flooring you choose; the best floor in the world will fail over a bad subfloor. Second, preparation work that adds a day to the job can add years to the life of the floor.
