Preparing Your Home for New Flooring: A Checklist
The Secret to a Smooth Installation
A great flooring installation starts long before the fitter arrives. When your home is prepared properly, the job goes faster, smoother and cleaner, and the finished floor is better for it. This guide walks through exactly what you need to do to get your home ready for new flooring, based on the thousands of installations we have carried out across Luton and Bedfordshire.
Clear the Room Completely
The single most helpful thing you can do is clear the room before we arrive. Move furniture, remove rugs, take down curtains and clear ornaments from shelves. Flooring installation needs clear access to every part of the room, and a clear room means we can work quickly without moving your belongings around.
If you have heavy items you cannot move yourself, such as a piano, a heavy wardrobe or large appliances, tell us when you book. We can often help move them, but we need to know in advance so we can plan and bring the right equipment.
Why Preparation Makes a Better Floor
It is worth understanding why all this preparation matters. A fitter working around furniture is a slower fitter, but more importantly, the quality of the job suffers. A room that is clear means we can stretch the carpet across the full width properly, run the boards in the right direction without obstacles, and get the joins exactly where they should be. It also means less risk of your belongings being bumped or scratched.
There is another benefit too: a clear room dries and sets faster if any products are used that need time to cure, and it makes the finishing work far neater. In short, the ten minutes it takes you to clear a room is directly repaid in the quality of the finished floor.
Prepare Fragile and Valuable Items
Installation creates dust, even for experienced fitters working carefully. Before we arrive, consider covering or removing anything you want to protect. That includes fragile ornaments, electronics, and anything with sentimental value. It is far easier to protect these before the work starts than to clean up after.
Picture frames on walls, particularly above where we will be working, should come down. A loose frame can be dislodged by the vibration of a hammer or the movement of a stretch tool. Ten minutes of preparation now can save a lot of heartache later.
Handle the Old Flooring
Decide what happens to your old floor before we start. If you are replacing carpet, the old carpet and underlay can usually be removed and disposed of by us, but ask about this when you get your quote so there are no surprises. If you have old laminate or vinyl, let us know, as the removal and disposal needs to be planned.
If you are keeping furniture in the room and only replacing the floor around it, make sure the items you keep are clearly communicated to us. We will work around what is staying, but the room needs to be prepared accordingly.
Deal With Appliances and White Goods
If your flooring runs under a fridge, freezer, washing machine or cooker, these will need to be moved or disconnected. Arrange this before installation day if you can, or let us know so we can plan. Some appliances can be moved by the installation team, but specialist items such as gas cookers should always be handled by qualified professionals.
This is particularly relevant for kitchens, where the new floor may run right under the appliances. The cleanest, most professional result comes from flooring that runs underneath the units, but that requires the appliances to be out of the way first.
Prepare Pets and Children
Installation days are busy, with people coming and going and doors opening. For everyone's safety, arrange for pets to be in a safe place during the work, and for young children to be looked after away from the installation area. We always work safely, but a busy fitting day is not the time for little ones or curious pets underfoot.
Most of our customers find the installation is finished within a day or two depending on the size of the job. Knowing that in advance helps you plan around the work.
Think About Access and Parking
Tell us about access when you book. Is there parking near your home for a van full of materials? Are there stairs or tight corridors that we should know about? A little planning on access makes the delivery of flooring and underlay straightforward, and helps everything run to schedule.
On the Day: What to Expect
On installation day, we will arrive on time, cover and protect the working area, and get straight to the job. We will walk you through the plan, confirm the details, and answer any last-minute questions. We finish by clearing the work area, so you are left with a clean room and a beautiful new floor.
If you have prepared as outlined above, the whole process will feel effortless, and the finished floor will be all you remember about the day.
