It Started With a Van and a Dream
Every business has a beginning, and MUM Flooring Studio is no different. What started as a one-man operation with a van full of samples and tools has grown into one of Luton's most trusted flooring businesses, with hundreds of completed projects and a reputation built one home at a time. This is the story of how we got here.
The First Jobs: 2015–2016
Like most tradespeople, we started small. The first jobs were bedrooms and hallways, fitted for friends, family and neighbours who were willing to give a new flooring business a chance. We learned fast, because there is no classroom like a real staircase with a real deadline and a real customer watching.
Those early jobs taught us the fundamentals that still guide us today. Measure twice, fit once. Prep the subfloor properly, because no product can fix a floor that was never ready for it. And above all, treat every home as if it were our own. That last rule has never changed.
Growing a Reputation: 2017–2019
By 2017 the word was spreading. A good fitter in a local community does not need to advertise much; the customers find you. Referrals started arriving from customers who had shown their new flooring to friends and family. We added more product types as we grew, moving beyond basic carpet fitting into LVT, laminate and engineered wood.
This was the period when we learned how different each product really is. Carpet fitting is about seams, grippers and underlay. LVT is about subfloor preparation and moisture. Engineered wood is about acclimatisation and precise cutting. Each new product type made us more useful to our customers and more valuable to the local area.
The Milestone: 500+ Projects
Reaching 500 completed projects was a proud moment for us. It was not just a number; it represented five hundred homes across Luton, Dunstable, Harpenden, St Albans and the wider Bedfordshire region, each one with its own story. Five hundred bedrooms, kitchens, hallways, staircases and open-plan living spaces transformed.
The most satisfying part of that milestone was realising how much of it had come from referrals. When a customer trusts you enough to recommend you to their family, that is the highest compliment a small business can receive. It told us we were doing things right.
The Jobs We Remember
Ask any fitter and they will tell you that the memorable jobs are not always the biggest. We remember the customer who had been quoted a fortune by a national chain and thought a new floor was out of reach, until we found a solution that brought it within budget. We remember the family with young children who needed a durable, easy-to-clean floor in the kitchen and were overjoyed when we fitted LVT that looked like real wood.
And we remember the trickier jobs, the old concrete floors that needed days of careful preparation before the beautiful new floor could go down. Those are the jobs that remind us why we do things properly, because the finished result is a floor that looks as good in year ten as it did on day one. Every one of these projects taught us something, and together they built the experience we rely on today.
Becoming a Family Business
As the business grew, so did the team. MUM Flooring Studio is family-run, and that family ethos is at the heart of how we operate. It means we are personally invested in every job. It means our reputation in the local community matters to us in a way it never could to a national chain.
Being family-run also means continuity. The name on the van is the name of the people doing the work. When customers call back two years later with a question or a small repair, they reach the same people who fitted their floor in the first place.
Expanding Our Services
Over the years our range of services has grown to match what local homeowners actually need. Today we offer supply and fit for carpets, luxury vinyl tile, laminate, engineered wood and vinyl, alongside free home surveys and honest, itemised quotes. We help customers choose, measure, prepare and fit, all under one roof.
We have also become experts in the trickier jobs that other fitters often avoid. Uneven concrete subfloors, moisture issues in older properties, complex stair runners, and large open-plan spaces where seams have to be invisible. These are the jobs that other companies shy away from, and they are the jobs we enjoy most.
Where We Are Today
Today MUM Flooring Studio is an established, trusted name in Luton flooring. We serve the whole of Bedfordshire and the surrounding towns, and our diary is built on referrals and repeat business. But the fundamentals have not changed since that first van. Measure properly. Prep properly. Fit properly. Stand behind the work.
